Irrational Exuberance

I know, I know. We won a game. Saunders posted our first shutout of the season. It’s great.

But it was Portland. And at home. We are not quite the worst team in the division, because right now Portland and Dallas are.

Don’t get me wrong. We needed a win. I’m thrilled we won. But getting excited about beating Portland is like boasting that you were able to kick Justin Bieber’s ass. Sure, a paparazzo couldn’t do it, but you aren’t exactly going to have the U of MMA rushing to invite you to their next cage match.

I was enjoying my father’s day and only saw part of the game. From what I saw, I know I want to see a lot more of Jack McBean and a lot less of Chad Barrett. And I’m really happy to see Josh Saunders back on the field. Other than that, the jury is still out.

Next weekend we have Vancouver at home. That’s a team in its ascendancy, holding a solid third place in the conference with nearly double the points we have after a similar number of games. A win there is still a long way from me declaring our problem solved. But like any twelve step program, this is all about one step at a time. Stringing together two wins in a row would be a nice second step.

It is my nature to remain optimistic, so I’ll be there cheering. Let’s hope not in vain.
